Steam Store Page Checklist: Grade Your Steam Page

Answer a few questions about your Steam page, paste your descriptions, and get a score out of 100 with a checklist split into what Steam requires and what Valve recommends. Every failed item comes with the fix and a link to the Steamworks page it comes from, and you can copy the whole checklist as markdown.

Step 1 of 3: Basics

How to use it

  1. Type your game name and short description, enter how many tags the page has, and press Next.
  2. Enter your screenshot count, tick what is true about your screenshots, trailer and capsule art, and press Next.
  3. Paste your About This Game text, enter how many GIFs or images it embeds, and press Grade my page.
  4. Read the Required by Steam list first, then the Recommendations, and work through each Fix.
  5. Press Copy as markdown to paste the checklist into your task tracker, or Change inputs to grade again.

What Steam requires before your page goes live

Each Steamworks app has a store presence checklist on its landing page that must be finished before you can submit the page for review. Valve's documentation marks these as required: at least 5 screenshots at 1920 x 1080 or larger in 16:9, a trailer, the four store capsules (Header 920 x 430, Small 462 x 174, Main 1232 x 706, Vertical 748 x 896) and the library assets (Library Capsule 600 x 900, Library Hero 3840 x 1240, Library Logo and Library Header 920 x 430). Steam also requires at least 5 tags before launch.

Valve's review checks that the page only shows content that will be in the game at launch, that capsules carry a readable title or logo, that screenshots show only gameplay (no concept art, pre-rendered stills, awards or marketing text), and that the description is detailed and coherent. Descriptions cannot contain links or spelled-out web addresses, images that imitate Steam buttons, or promotion of other Steam games.

Plan the timing too. Store page review typically takes 3 to 5 business days, and Valve asks you to submit at least 7 business days before you want the page live. A new game must be visible as Coming Soon for at least two weeks before it can release, and its name cannot be changed once it has been through the pre-release review.

Valve's advice for each part of the page

Short description: it sits at the very top of the page and is limited to a few hundred characters, so lead with what makes the game different and name the genre. It only allows plain text, and Valve asks you to leave out time-based text such as Now Available, Available on March 4th or Prepurchase now.

Trailer: Valve recommends putting a mostly-gameplay trailer first, from the player's view with the HUD visible, and planning for viewers who watch without sound and may give you less than 10 seconds. The first two trailers play before the screenshots, and Steam cuts the 6-second microtrailer used in sale pages and hubs from your first video.

About This Game: avoid walls of text, bold your section headers and key features, skip insider jargon, and embed GIFs or textless screenshots next to the features they show. Keep each image under 5MB and all of them under 15MB in total. Tags: Valve recommends using up to 20, because the top 20 decide which tag pages, recommendations and More Like This rows you appear in.

How the score works

Required items share 70 points and recommendations share 30, so one missing requirement costs more than one skipped tip. Checks that need your eyes, such as whether every screenshot is gameplay, come from your answers. Checks on your text are automatic: the grader looks for line breaks and formatting codes in the short description, web addresses in both descriptions, date and launch wording, a genre word, headings, and paragraphs over 100 words.

The 100-word paragraph limit is this tool's own rule of thumb for Valve's advice to avoid walls of text, not a Steam rule. Everything runs in your browser; your text is never uploaded. For the capsule images themselves, use the Steam capsule maker, and to choose your 20 tags, use the Steam tag picker.

Frequently asked questions

How long can a Steam short description be?
Valve's documentation says the short description is limited to a few hundred characters, and the Steamworks editor shows the exact limit as you type. This grader counts your characters so you can compare.
How many screenshots does a Steam page need?
At least 5, at 1920 x 1080 or larger in a 16:9 ratio, and they must show only gameplay. Valve also suggests marking at least 4 as suitable for all ages if your content allows, or they may not show in some places on Steam.
Is a trailer required on Steam?
Yes. Steam requires a trailer as part of the release process. Valve recommends making the first one mostly gameplay because the first video is also used to make the 6-second microtrailer.
Can I put links in my Steam description?
No. Store page descriptions cannot link to other websites, including through images, QR codes or spelled-out addresses. Use the website and social media link fields in the Basic Info tab instead.
How long does Steam take to review a store page?
Valve says store page review typically takes 3 to 5 business days and asks you to submit at least 7 business days before you want it live, so there is time to make changes.
