Steam Tags: Pick the Best 20 Tags for Your Game

Click the genres, sub-genres, themes, features and visuals that fit your game, and get a ready-to-enter list of up to 20 Steam tags. The list puts specific tags such as sub-genres first and broad ones such as Indie last, warns about conflicting or too-broad picks, and copies in one click. Every tag name is spelled exactly as in Valve's public tag list.

How Steam uses your tags

Steam requires at least 5 tags before a game launches and Valve recommends adding up to 20. You can apply many tags, but only the top 20 are visible to players and used by Steam to decide which tag pages, browse views, recommendations and More Like This sections your game appears in.

Order matters. Valve says your top 5 tags should paint a clear picture of the game because they are also used to describe it, and some store filters prioritize the first 15. For recommendations, overlap matters more than order: the more of your top 20 tags a player's past games share, the stronger the match.

Rare tags carry more weight. Valve's own example is that Action matters very little for recommendations because so many games have it, while a tag like Party-Based RPG has much more influence because fewer games use it. That is why this picker warns when broad tags land in your top 5.

Tags also decide events. Steam invites games to its themed sale Fests based on their tags, so a Racing Fest invitation needs the Racing tag, and Next Fest sorts participating games by their tags and chosen categories.

How to order tags in the Tag Wizard

You set tags in Steamworks under Edit Store Page, Basic Info, Tags, using the Tag Wizard. It walks through genres, visuals and viewpoint, themes and moods, features and player support, and lets you order the tags. Its Suggest Prioritization button moves high-information tags like sub-genres to the top and low-information ones like Indie or Singleplayer to the bottom; Valve calls it a simple starting point to override as you see fit.

This picker follows the same idea: sub-genre, genre, themes and moods, visuals, features, players, then top-level genres and broad tags. Valve's own example of a well-placed genre chain is Super Meat Boy: super-genre Action, genre Platformer, sub-genre Precision Platformer. Lead with the most specific one that is true.

Players with non-limited accounts can add tags to your game too, and their tags mix with yours and gain weight as more people apply them. You can remove inaccurate ones, such as 2D on a 3D game or Family Friendly on a horror game, from the Tag Wizard or the plus button next to the tags on your store page.

Where the tag names come from

Valve publishes its full tag list through the public Steam Web API (IStoreService/GetTagList). On November 4, 2026 it held 446 tags; this picker offers about 200 of the ones most useful for describing a game, each checked against that list. The grouping into categories follows the Tag Wizard's sections and is this tool's own; check the Tag Wizard for tags not listed here.

A good way to sanity-check your picks is the one Valve suggests: look at the tags on games similar to yours on Steam. Then make sure your store page shows what the tags promise, which is where the Steam store page checklist helps.

Frequently asked questions

How many tags can a Steam game have?
You can apply many tags, but only the top 20 are visible to players and used by Steam for visibility. Steam requires at least 5 before launch, and Valve recommends adding up to 20.
Does the order of Steam tags matter?
Yes. Higher-weighted tags govern visibility more, your top 5 are used to describe the game, and some store filters prioritize the first 15. Put your most specific, most accurate tags first.
Should I use the Indie tag on Steam?
It is fine to include if it is true, but Valve treats Indie and Singleplayer as low-information tags and the Tag Wizard's prioritization moves them to the bottom. Keep them out of your top 5.
Can players change my game's Steam tags?
Players with non-limited accounts can apply tags, and those tags gain weight as more people add them. As the developer you can remove tags that do not fit from the Tag Wizard or from your store page.
Do Steam demos have their own tags?
No. A demo inherits the tags of its base game, so tag the base game.
