What a game press kit should include

The best-known template is presskit(), a free press page tool by Rami Ismail of Vlambeer, built with feedback from journalists and indie developers. Its pages have a factsheet (developer, release date, platforms, website, regular price, press contact), then description, history, features, videos, images, logo and icon, awards and recognition, selected articles, additional links, an about section, team and repeating collaborators, and contact.

This generator covers the parts a small team usually has ready: the factsheet, a description, features, trailer and store links, screenshots, team and contact. Write the description as two or three short paragraphs a journalist could quote, and keep features to one line each.

The point is speed for the writer. As presskit() puts it, a journalist who finds a game but has no access to its information and media cannot write about it, so put everything on one page and make the files easy to grab.

Screenshots, trailer and hosting

Reuse your Steam screenshots. Steam requires at least 5 at 1920 x 1080 or larger in 16:9, showing only gameplay, so you already have a press-ready set. Host the full-size files next to the press page and paste their direct links, ending in .png or .jpg, so each image in the kit opens the full file.

Link your trailer on YouTube or another video site rather than embedding a player; the page has no scripts or embeds, so it stays small and fast. Add your Steam store page link so writers can check the price and release date and wishlist the game.

The HTML file carries a Content-Security-Policy that blocks scripts, styles from other sites and form submissions, and every bit of text you type is escaped, so a stray < or quote cannot break the page. Only full http or https links are kept; anything else is listed in the result so you can fix it.

presskit() or a static page?

presskit() is open source under the GPL-3.0 license and runs as PHP on your own server, building pages from XML files, which suits studios with several games. This generator makes one static HTML page instead, so you can host it anywhere that serves files, such as your own site or GitHub Pages.

Keep the press kit in step with your store page: the same description, the same screenshots, and the same release date. The Steam store page checklist helps you get those right first.

Frequently asked questions

What is a press kit for a game?
It is a single page with everything a journalist or streamer needs to cover your game: the key facts, a description, features, screenshots, a trailer link, the team and a press contact.
What is presskit()?
presskit(), pronounced do presskit, is a free press page tool made by Rami Ismail of Vlambeer. It is open source and runs on your own PHP server. This generator follows its layout but produces a single static HTML file instead.
Where should I host my press kit?
On your own website, for example at yourstudio.com/press, next to the full-size screenshots it links to. Any host that serves static files works because the page is one HTML file with no scripts.
Can I edit the downloaded press kit?
Yes. The HTML file is plain, readable HTML with the styles at the top, so you can open it in any text editor. The markdown copy is easy to paste into a doc, a wiki or an email.
Is my information uploaded anywhere?
No. The page is built in your browser and downloaded straight to your computer. The preview only loads the screenshot URLs you entered.
