Steam Short Description Writer and Tagline Generator
Give your game's title, genre, core hook and what players do, pick a tone, and get 3 or 5 short description drafts for the top of your Steam page plus 5 one-line taglines. Every draft shows its character count and has its own Copy button. Writing the drafts needs a free Ziva account.
How to use it
- Enter the Game title, Genre and Core hook in one sentence, then press Next.
- Describe What do players do, and optionally How should it feel and Features to highlight, then press Next.
- Pick a Tone and 3 variants or 5 variants. Sign in to Ziva if asked, then press Write descriptions.
- Press Copy on the draft you like, or Copy all to keep every draft and tagline. Press Generate another for a fresh set.
- Paste your pick into Steamworks under Store Presence > Edit Store Page > Description and check the count against the editor's limit.
What Valve says about the short description
The short description sits at the very top of your Steam store page and is the brief synopsis Steam uses wherever space is limited. Valve's Steamworks documentation says it is limited to a few hundred characters and is often read by players who are only skimming, so it should quickly say why someone would want to learn more about this game in particular. Valve adds that it is often a good idea to mention the genre.
It only allows plain text: extra line breaks and bullet points do not render properly. Valve asks you to leave out time-related text such as Now Available, Available on March 4th or Prepurchase now, and its rules for all store descriptions forbid links to other websites (including web addresses spelled out in text) and advertising other products on Steam. The full feature list and story belong in the longer About This Game section further down the page.
Valve does not publish an exact character count in that documentation. This tool asks the AI for drafts between 150 and 280 characters and flags any draft over 300, which is this tool's own target rather than a Steam rule.
A formula that fits in a few hundred characters
Most strong short descriptions do three things in two sentences: name the genre, state the one thing no other game does, and show what the player does with a concrete verb. For example: A roguelike deckbuilder where every card you play lights up more of a pitch-black dungeon. Build a deck of light spells, push deeper each run, and fight the things that hide in the dark.
Cut adjectives that any game could use, such as unique, immersive or epic adventure, and replace them with the specific thing that makes it so. Keep the tone of the page: a cozy farming game and a grim survival shooter should not sound alike. A tagline is shorter still, one line you can reuse on your capsule art, trailer end card, social posts and press emails.
Treat the drafts as a starting point. Check every claim against your game, because the AI only knows what you typed, then mix the best phrases from different drafts. To check the rest of your store page, use the Steam store page checklist, and pick your tags with the Steam tag picker.
