Mix the kinds of moments you reward
A good achievement list rewards different players for different things. Progress achievements (finish the tutorial, finish chapter 1) mark the path and tell you how far players get. Skill achievements (no deaths, hardest difficulty) give experts a goal. Exploration and collecting achievements reward players who poke into corners, and funny ones (pet the dog, fall off the same ledge three times) give players something to laugh about and share.
Write the description as the exact condition, like Defeat 100 enemies, not a hint. Players use achievements as a checklist, so a clear condition is easier to chase than a riddle.
Steam achievement names and limits
On Steam, every achievement has a name and a description that players see, and both can be localized in the Steamworks partner site so players see them in their own language. Steamworks asks for achievement names and icons to be all-ages appropriate.
Steamworks limits games to 100 achievements at first, and allows more once the game reaches the threshold for profile features. If you plan a long list, start with the ones that matter most.
Keep names short: two to four words read at a glance in an unlock notification, and the description can carry the detail.
