Game Name Generator: Video Game Title Ideas

Pick a genre and a mood, add a keyword if you have one, and get 12 video game title ideas at once. Star the ones you like; they stay on the list while you generate more.

Step 1 of 3: Genre
What kind of game is it?

How to use it

  1. Choose a genre, such as Platformer, Horror or Strategy, and press Next.
  2. Choose a mood: Dark, Epic, Cozy, Funny or Mysterious, and press Next.
  3. Type an optional keyword, such as your hero or main object, and press Generate game names.
  4. Press the star next to any title to keep it, then press Generate more for a fresh batch.
  5. Press Copy all or Download list to save your titles, or Copy Ziva prompt to build a title screen.

What makes a good video game name

A good title tells a stranger the genre and the feeling in two or three words. Compare a cozy farming title like Honeyed Meadow with a horror title like Feeding the Static: neither needs a trailer to set expectations.

Short beats clever. A name you can say out loud once and spell correctly is easier to search for, easier to remember after a stream, and fits on a small store capsule. If a title needs a subtitle to make sense, try the subtitle on its own.

Search the name on the stores you plan to ship on before you commit. If the first results are another game, a famous film or a common phrase, players searching for your game will find those first.

Check the name before you make it official

In the United States you can search registered and pending trademarks for free with the USPTO Trademark Search system at tmsearch.uspto.gov. Under the international Nice Classification, downloadable computer game software sits in Class 9 and online game services in Class 41, so those are the classes to look at first.

Also check that the domain and the social handles you want are free. None of this is legal advice: if you plan to register a trademark, talk to a trademark attorney in your country.

How the keyword works

When you type a keyword, every other title in the batch is built around it, for example as the subject (Fox of Aldermere), with a mood word (The Silent Fox) or with a subtitle (Fox: The Long Night). The other half uses only the genre and mood word lists, so you still see ideas you would not have thought of.

Frequently asked questions

How does the game name generator work?
It combines hand-written word lists for each genre and mood with title patterns such as Adjective Noun, Noun of Place and Noun with a subtitle. It removes duplicates and skips a list of well-known game titles, then shows 12 names.
Is the game name generator free?
Yes. It runs in your browser with no account and no AI calls, so you can generate as many names as you like.
Can I use the generated names for my game?
Yes, the names are yours to use. Short phrases can still match an existing game or trademark by chance, so search the stores and a trademark database before you announce your title.
How do I keep names I like?
Press the star next to a name. Starred names stay at the top of the list when you press Generate more, and Copy all and Download list include them.
Should my game title include the genre?
It helps when players can guess the genre from the name, but you do not need the literal word. A word like Throttle already says racing, and Grimoire already says fantasy.
