Placeholder Sprite Generator: Free Programmer Art
Pick what you need, set the size, count and color, and get a set of clean placeholder sprites: labeled boxes, humanoid, four-legged and flying silhouettes, coins and other pickups, or UI buttons. Each sprite can show its name and pixel size, and you download them one by one, as a sprite sheet or as a ZIP. Everything is drawn in your browser.
How to use it
- Pick Labeled boxes, Humanoid, Quadruped, Flyer, Items and pickups or UI buttons, then press Next.
- Pick a size or type your own, set How many, the Color and the Label text, and choose whether to Show the label, Show the size and use Hard pixel edges. The preview updates as you go. Press Next.
- Type the File name prefix and the padding for the sprite sheet.
- Press Make placeholder sprites.
- Click any sprite to download its PNG, or press Download all (ZIP) or Download sprite sheet PNG.
Why placeholder art helps
Placeholders let you build and test the game before any real art exists. A box labeled Enemy 2 at 32x48 tells everyone what the object is and how big the final sprite must be, so artists can draw to the exact size and you can swap the files later without touching the code.
Silhouettes go one step further: a humanoid stands on the bottom edge of its sprite like a real character would, and a four-legged sprite faces right, so the origin, collision shape and flip logic you set up now still fit the final art.
Sizes and colors that work
Use the size your final art will have. Common pixel art sizes are 16 x 16 and 32 x 32 for tiles and items, and taller cells such as 32 x 48 for characters. Keep Hard pixel edges on for pixel art so every pixel is fully on or off; turn it off for smooth art at large sizes.
A different color for each spreads the hues evenly around the color wheel, so a set of 6 enemies or 6 items is easy to tell apart at a glance. Labels pick black or white text automatically for contrast and are left out when the sprite is too small to read them.
Using the sprite sheet in Godot
The sheet packs every sprite in a grid close to a square, left to right and top to bottom. With 0 px padding you can put it on a Sprite2D, set Hframes and Vframes in the Animation section of the Inspector to the number of columns and rows, and change Frame to pick a sprite. The separate PNGs work in any engine.
