Skill Tree Maker: Generate and Edit Talent Trees

Pick a class, how many branches and tiers the tree has, and how skill points are priced, and get a full skill tree with prerequisite lines and a capstone at the end of every branch. Click any skill to rename it or change its description and cost, then download the tree as a PNG or SVG image, or as JSON your game can load. It runs in your browser from hand-written skill lists, not AI.

Step 1 of 3: Class
Which class or theme is the tree for?

How to use it

  1. Choose a class such as Warrior, Mage or Engineer, and press Next.
  2. Choose 2, 3 or 4 branches and 3 to 6 tiers, and press Next.
  3. Choose a point cost style (Flat, Rising or Big capstones) and press Generate skill tree.
  4. Click a skill in the tree and edit its Name, Description and Cost in the form below it. Press Reroll tree for a new tree.
  5. Press PNG or SVG to download the image, or JSON to download the tree as data.

Designing a skill tree players want to explore

Give each branch one clear identity, such as defense, fire magic or pets, so the player can read a build from the branch names alone. Early tiers should be cheap and broadly useful, and each tier deeper should change how the player plays rather than adding another small percentage.

End every branch with a capstone: one expensive skill that rewards committing to that branch. The Big capstones cost style prices it at 3 points while everything else costs 1, so reaching it is a real decision.

Decide the point budget before you tune costs. If the player earns one point per level and the level cap is 30, a tree that costs 60 points to fill means a finished character owns half of it, which pushes players to specialize and gives a reason to replay. The results show the total cost to unlock everything, so you can compare it with your budget. The XP Curve Calculator on this site helps you plan how fast those points arrive.

The skill tree JSON format

The JSON download holds the theme, the cost style, the total cost, a branches list with an id and a name for each branch, and a nodes list. Every node has an id, the id of its branch, its tier (1 is the top), a name, a description, a cost and a requires list.

The requires list holds the ids of every node that must be unlocked first, and it is empty for starting skills. A skill can be unlocked when every id in requires is unlocked and the player has at least its cost in points. That one rule is enough for the whole tree, including capstones that need both skills above them.

In Godot 4 you can read the file with FileAccess.get_file_as_string and parse it with JSON.parse_string, which returns null if the file is not valid JSON. Godot parses every JSON number as a float, so wrap tier and cost in int() before comparing them with the player's points.

Frequently asked questions

Is this skill tree maker free?
Yes. It runs in your browser with no account, and you can use the trees and images in free or commercial games.
Can I edit the generated skill tree?
Yes. Click any skill to change its name, description and point cost. Your edits appear in the tree and in every download. Press Reroll tree only when you want a new tree, because it replaces your edits.
What is the difference between a skill tree and a talent tree?
Games use both names for the same idea: a set of upgrades the player unlocks with points, where some skills require others first. Talent tree is more common in RPGs and MMOs, skill tree in action games, and this tool makes either.
Can I load the skill tree into my game?
Yes. The JSON download lists every node with its id, branch, tier, cost and prerequisite ids, which Godot, Unity, Unreal and other engines can read with their built-in JSON support. Use the PNG or SVG as a design reference or for your design document.
Does the skill tree generator use AI?
No. Skills come from hand-written lists for each class and are placed into branches and tiers in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.
