RPG Item Name Generator: Loot and Magic Items

Pick an item type and a rarity and get 12 RPG item names, each with an effect idea and a line of flavor text. Covers armor, shields, helmets, potions, rings, amulets, artifacts and scrolls; for swords, bows and guns use the weapon name generator. Download the list as JSON to start your loot table.

Step 1 of 2: Item type
What kind of item?

How to use it

  1. Choose an item type, such as Armor, Potion, Ring or Artifact, and press Next.
  2. Choose a rarity from Common to Legendary, and press Generate item names.
  3. Star the items you want to keep, then press Generate more for a new batch.
  4. Press Download as JSON for name, description, type and rarity fields, or Download list for text.
  5. Press Copy Ziva prompt to have Ziva build an inventory with these items in your game.

Make the name match the rarity

Players read rarity from the shape of a name. A plain word and an item (Worn Chainmail, Minor Healing Potion) says common. A quality word or an of-suffix (Sturdy Buckler, Ring of Haste) says uncommon. A coined compound (Frostward, Embercrest Helm) says rare. A coined name with a place or an order attached (Whispering Moonbrew, Starcoil of the Last Watch) says epic. An owner or a myth (Vaelmir's Mantle, Aegis of the First Dawn) says legendary.

Color helps too. World of Warcraft, for example, shows common items in white, uncommon in green, rare in blue, epic in purple and legendary in orange. Whatever colors you pick, keep them the same in the inventory, on the loot drop and in the tooltip.

Store items as data, not as code

Keep each item's name, type, rarity, effect and description in a data file so you can rename and rebalance without touching scripts. The JSON download from this tool is already in that shape: one object per item, ready for you to add stats such as price, weight or heal amount.

In Godot, a custom Resource works well for this: write a script with class_name ItemData that extends Resource, give it @export properties with default values, then create one .tres file per item and edit it in the Inspector. Godot saves .tres files as text, so they diff cleanly in version control.

Once you have the items, decide how often each one drops. The loot table calculator turns drop weights into the real chance of seeing a Legendary item.

Frequently asked questions

How do you name a magic item?
Start from what it does and how rare it is. Low tier items get a plain word and the item, like Minor Mana Potion. Rare items get a coined name like Frostward. Legendary items get an owner or a myth, like Aegis of the Last Light.
Does this include weapons?
No. This tool covers armor, shields, helmets, potions, rings, amulets, artifacts and consumables. For swords, axes, bows, staffs and guns, use the weapon name generator, which works the same way.
Are the effects balanced?
They are effect ideas, not numbers. Common and uncommon items get small everyday effects and rare to legendary items get bigger ones, so you set the exact values to fit your game.
What is in the JSON download?
An array with one object per item, with name, description, type and rarity fields. The description holds the effect and the flavor text.
Is the RPG item name generator free?
Yes. It runs in your browser with no account and no AI calls.
